You don't exist!

I'm sure most of the folks reading this have created characters, be it for online RPG's, face-to-face RP, or just fiction. I also suspect a lot of folks, like me, can roughly describe the character. I do, though, often find myself saying 'I don't know exactly what they look like, but if I ran into them in the street, I'd know them.'

[livejournal.com profile] astraether, and maybe a few other folks I never knew played there, will remember Maera, my feisty red-headed barmaid from CryptMUSH. I met her on Wednesday! Working behind the rental counter of the place I hired a van from to transport Anne's birthday present: *exactly* the height, build, hair, face I imagined. Very uncanny.

Maera!

*sniff*, *sniff* 'Course I remember Maera. We had some great scenes. In fact, I've still got a few on my website, as a little homage to that poor defunct game. It's a pity we never got to wrap up that story either, but I guess our last scene was as good a farewell as we were gonna get. Didja ever notice that I have that one up as well? Here 'tis if you feel like rereading some time: A Last Goodbye.

Oh, and you should'a taken a picture of the woman!

"No, seriously, you just look like someone."
"Who?"
"Uh, well, she doesn't exist..."
"What?"
"Um, I mean, she does, but only in my head..."
"Riiiiight." (*walks off in a huff and secretly vows never to return*)

Hmm. Okay. Maybe not.

Oh I agree - there were a number of ways that story could have gone, but they'd have required the co-operation of others. At least if we were to do it now as a piece of collaborative reason, we'd have no-one to upset but ourselves.

I'll be back hiring another van soon - want me to take a camera?!
