You probably have to be a programmer to appreciate this.

So I'm sitting on train with laptop open. Woman next to me, who can't and won't stop talking.... is reading OVER MY SHOULDER. *grr*. Being not in the mood for her prattling, I fire up TextMate and the checkout dir for MooseX-AbstractFactory. "What's that? It looks like .NET" ...

Me, somewhat gruffly, "It's Perl."

"Oh." ... pause.. "Are you a web developer?"

Me. "mmhm..." *thinks* ohpleasepissoffandleavemealone

Her: "Oh. Me too. I work for Logica." ... long pause, craning neck... "Uh. It looks like...."

me: *thinks* Say 'line noise' and I'll kill you...

her: "C++".

(Moose is a very VERY sweet OO extension for Perl. Being told it looks like C++ will probably make the author's day.)

all I know about Perl is that every so often the bl**dy thing falls over and I get an error message and lose an hour's worth of work.

Happens in things written in any language.

rarely with things written in English - unless you drop your notebook down the loo ;-)

Being told it looks like C++ will probably make the author's day.

Or induce homicidal rage, depending on what they think of C++.

At least she didn't say C-- ;-)

I have reached the point in life where I will gladly hurt the feelings of strangers in order to get some peace. Just saying "please leave me alone, I need to think" works pretty well ime :).

On a partially-related note: Met a friend of Dave's over the weekend who has got a DS with various DIY things including the DS Linux operating system for homebrewing applications. I just thought that might amuse you. (There's also a homebrew that makes your DS screens mimic an ipod, with the top screen being the menu screen and the bottom screen having the thumbwheel.)
