BBC radio DJ John Peel has died.
My abiding memory of him is on a late night show in the late 70s, starting to play a truly dire single by some new band, and lifting the needle with an audible scratch after thirty seconds with a laconic "well, that's quite enough of that..."

And on a mailing list I'm on, several sf-pro types indicated that they were startled by the news, until they read the second line that noted it was the DJ, not the author :-}

Date: 2004-10-26 03:24 pm (UTC)He joined Radio 1 at the launch in 1967, and established himself with the late night programme Top Gear.
And so obviously he didn't do anything else at all important between those two dates? Like make it impossible for Radio 1 to be taken seriously unless it did employ him? I would have expected better than that from the BBC, even now.

Date: 2004-10-26 03:32 pm (UTC)Returning to England in 1967, he joined the pirate station, Radio London, before transferring to the BBC's new national pop channel, Radio 1.
Um, there was slightly more involved than that, guys.

Date: 2004-10-26 03:52 pm (UTC)This was a man who gave a damn about the music. He didn't care about trends and popularity, he wanted something that sounded interesting.
I suspect he is introducing Mozart to the Ramones and Gerry Garcia and outraging a lot of the traditionalists in the Heavenly Choir.

Date: 2004-10-27 03:45 pm (UTC)I was never a fan of Radio 1 (in my yoof I preferred Radio Caroline/RNI), but now I see no point to it at all. RIP -- or more likely in the company of some of his favourite musicians...
