Fairport Convention
Feb. 10th, 2006 09:33 amTook the 'bus up to Lincoln tonight, packed to the gunwales with me,
bardling,
bedlamhouse,
decadentdave,
djbp,
deborah_c and Minstrel, to see those grand old men of folk-rock, Fairport Convention.
My God they can still do it. :)
Interesting set - more older numbers than I expected, and not the ones I was expecting even then - Who Knows Where The Time Goes, Crazy Man Michael, Tamlin, Banks Of The Sweet Primroses, Sir Patrick Spens, and a return to the Swirling Pit (ace mandolin duet)/Matty Groves/Rutland Reel/Sack The Juggler Medley. I've heard Fairport start Matty Groves so many ways, from a jazz-tinged thing last tour, to Maart Allcock's Pink Floyd/Run Like Hell inspired metal opening, but the Swirling Pit segue's the one I heard first (on In Reel Time).
Realised talking to Anne when we got home - that's the seventh or eighth time I've seen Fairport: for certain once on the In Reel Time tour, twice on the Five Seasons tour, once acoustic in a church in Oxfordshire, once supporting Tull, once last year, and last night. I *think* I also saw them on the Red And Gold tour. Makes them my most seen band (outside of SF/filk conventions), followed by Rumours Of Fleetwood Mac (5) and then the Mac themselves (4).
