Have you ever had a song come on the radio that was so mind-blowing that you had to turn the radio OFF when it finished, just to avoid spoiling the memory....?

Happened to me on the way home last night: Muse's "Uprising". Depeche Mode meets Tubeway Army meets Queen meets the Dr Who theme with added rock.

I'd heard their "Knights of Cydonia" before, but it didn't grab me. Now I have context, it makes much more sense.

Cause to spent £13 on the Muse Basics playlist from iTunes...

I've been digging on Muse for awhile, partly in thanks to an Aussie friend who brought them up a couple years ago, and again thanks to Dave (Garrett@Chiv3 if you remember him, the little punk!) who now keeps us company in WoW.

Anyways, I first heard Uprising a couple weeks ago now, played during a trailer for the new V tv series. I paused the TV right off and had hubby look up the music. I should have recognized Muse. =)

Great group!

I'll definitely be checking them out. I like both songs, but I think I prefer "Knights of Cydonia" better... cool galloping beat, more "epic" feel, and trumpet(s).

Never heard of them, but Uprising's a powerful song, thanks for the pointer. :)

"Knights of Cydonia" is rather reminiscent of Yngwie J Malmsteen in feel (with added trumpet but without Paganini!), if I'd heard that I would definitely have been interested immediately. "Uprising" is "differently good", perhaps wouldn't have grabbed me as much immediately, but I'll now be looking for CDs with either or both (ah, two albums then, having just looked them up -- Spotify seem to have all of them). Quite what effect it will have on my driving *g*...

I forgot to say -- how the blazes did the audience stay completely still through "Uprising"? The bits I saw of them no one seemed to be moving. Were they actually listening to it? Were they actually alive?

Yes, that audience is lively. And that performance is more Malmsteen-like than the studio one. (Pity, though, that I couldn't get it to go full-screen. I don't understand Flash well enough to know why, when they others did...)

I won't be going to the Children in Need gig at the Albert Hall (although they might be on the TV feed) but if they do more reasonably priced ones that I can get to next year I'll be interested...

Yngwie!

Ooo, I love Yngwie. I saw him in concert back a long time ago (he was opening for Triumph, I believe). I love classical in my metal. :-)

I saw him in London many years back ('91, possibly? It was the "Fire and Ice" tour) with Uriah Heap opening. What really made me appreciate him was in the interval he and his bass player came out -- he had an acoustic guitar and the bass player had a cello, and they played 'straight' classical. I loved it but I think it freaked out some of the metal-heads in the audience *g*.

My only complaint was that when we came out I could still hear the traffic. Not loud enough *g*...

(When I saw Hawkwind at the Worldcon in Brighton in '87 we couldn't hear anything at all when we came out...)

I'd love to see Uriah Heep live. I love them, though mostly the earlier stuff ("Lady in Black" is just awesome!).

I'd love to see Hawkwind too. But I have seen one of their ex-members (Lemmy, now in Motorhead) a couple times.

There's a slight difference between Hawkwind and Motorhead. :-)

Mike, I just have two words for you.

Damn you. Now I can't get them outta my head. :)

Seriously though, I haven't heard any new hard-hitting rock in so long, I'd forgotten what it sounded like and almost didn't recognize it when you placed it right here in front of me.

And now I had to follow your example and pick up the iTunes Essentials too. :)

Thanks, mate. Seriously.

Yup, for some reason I watched this episode of Jools Holland over Christmas and my attention was arrested by Uprising. Debbie liked it too.
