sbisson:
1. When did you first connect ("go online"), and how?
Cambridge University's Phoenix system, in 1985, to send mail to my father at Hull University. First news posting 1991.
2. What was your first communications program?
Erm... whatever hid under 'connect' at the CUDN (Cambridge University Data Network) prompt.
3. When did you first chat over the internet, and how?
Over the internet, as opposed to a local system? to a friend in Minneapolis via talk in 1993. Although I chatted via DEC PHONE to another user on the MDC BBS system as early as 1991, and to other users on Essex MUD in 1987 or so.
4. What chat type program(s) do you use now?
Xchat, epic and mIRC for IRC, Psi and MyJabber for chat.
5. Who was your first service provider?
JANET and the University of Cambridge in '85, and then work (Shape Data/MDC/EDS Unigraphics). At home - CIX and Spuddy.
6. Did you ever use AOL?
Yup. Still have a low-useage account to keep my AIM name, and for occasional laptop dialup.
7. Do you admit using AOL in public?
I just did, didn't I?
8. Who is your current ISP?
Andrews and Arnold (http://www.aaisp.net/) - thoroughly recommended for geek-friendly ADSL with a clue.
9. What was the first computer that you used to access the 'net?
A BBC Micro, as a smart terminal to an IBM 3084 mainframe.
10. What computer do you use to access the 'net today?
Debian Linux workstation (AMD K6 500 running KDE 3), Mac G4 or StarMax, Toshiba Satellite running Win98SE. Oh, and a Handspring Visor Edge with a WiFi module, and a Nokia 6810 WAP phone.
11. What was your first 'net handle?
On a newsgroup? whitaker@mdcbbs.com
12. Did you use any other handles for any length of time? If so, what were they?
I was the Bard on alt.callahans from 91-93. (The original Bard - someone else used the handle later on).
13. What 'net handle do you normally use now?
It varies: I'm Penfold on IRC, FleetfootMike on AIM, Jabber and many BBs, mike@ for email and news.
14. Are you active on any websites other than LJ? If you're willing to say, what ones?
As the NTK T-t-shirt (which I MUST GET!) says, "I spend all day bitching about you on IRC channels you don't know about". Other than that, I'm active on The Ledge Board, The Fleetwood Mac Legacy, Go Your Own Way, uk.music.guitar, and FilkNet IRC.
