Interview meme II...
Jun. 5th, 2003 09:01 am...a cosy fireside chat with
cadhla
1. Can I come over?
Of course. :)
2. What do you most look forward to teaching to your son?
How to learn. :)
I'm waiting for the moment when he realises that Mummy and Daddy don't have all the answers, that there are books, websites, other people, that he can go to and find out answers for himself, and (hopefully) that doing so is FUN. For that moment when he says 'Dad? Where do I find out about....?"
3. What single work of literature was most formative in your life?
"Lord Of The Rings", without a shadow of a doubt. It opened up a whole genre of fiction that I wasn't really aware of before, and there is (still) something about the whole grandiose sweep of Middle Earth that inspires me to create.
4. Should I agree to write a sequel to 'Chasing St. Margaret' if that closes things?
Here! Are these about me or you? :)
I think you should even if it doesn't close things, which knowing your muse it won't *evil grin*. Part of that, I'm sure, is because I get a kick out of seeing people I know in the characters, but even apart from that it's a fun read.
5. Do you hope to publish 'Dark Places' more widely?
If I can find someone who can draw like I imagine, who has the time to, yes. I'd certainly like to get it up at the very least as a web-comic. In print would be great, but that's a distinctly more daunting and expensive proposition. The problem is, because of the art style I see it in, it's not a quick and easy proposition to illustrate.

5) Do you prefer playing solo, or with other musicians?
Yup, another interview...
Date: 2003-06-06 06:02 am (UTC)I really like Fairport I'm not really a "true" fan, but I did go to a Cropedy when I was in England. It was a wonderful time and I'm very grateful to Chris Bell for taking us. "Crazy Man Michael" is one of my favorite songs. I don't usually go in for "ose" but the story is so compelling on that one and especially the image at the ending (which I choose to take literally). The music is wonderful, people sometimes say I sound like Sandy Denny (which I always consider a high compliment), so when Bill Rintz (a wonderful fiddler/filker in the States) taught me how to play it on guitar I picked it up. I think the Northumbiran Small Pipes are a great addition. We kind of went hog wild with the arrangement on that one. Mixing it was - um - a challenge!
2) When are you coming back to England?
As soon as I can! I loved England. In a funny newagy mythical type way it felt like "home". (Mom always described my family ethnicity as "British Heinz 57"). I loved the British Filkers I met. (and the Germans I met in England). I found Glastonbury's Lady well to be one of the most peaceful places I'd been. I really want to give the British Museum a fair chance (our story of seeing it is amusing but suffice it to say we gave it about 1 hour total cause that's all we had).... The problem is money. So - either we'll get asked to be guests again (sorry - that was cheap wasn't it? :-) or, more likely, in a few years when the boys are older, we're settled somewhere and we can afford it we'll come for a visit. There is still a hope that Ed can do the organ recording tour of Europe with an RV over there, some of his British organ fans sent him magazines on RVing, but that's kind of a wild dream at this point.
3) Is there any chance of a Black Book Band reunion gig sometime?
Wow, that would be awesome! It's theoretically possible but, much like storming the castle, would probably take a miracle. I've bandied about the idea of a BBB children's album. So - who knows... we'll see. There was also talk at one time of doing a purely studio album, which potentially could take a long time but could let us work on our own respective time schedules.
4) What's the most fun you've had with your clothes on?
Oooh - that's hard. I have lots of fun with my clothes on. I'm not sure I can pick one... MewBaCon (a party with 85+ people to celebrate my *finally* graduating with my BA after 13 years on and off). - Really great jam sessions including one with Lorraine Lee Hammond, Bennett Hammond, and some other professional folk musicians at their house once. - Clearwater Folk Festival with a bunch of astronomer folk musician friends - Black Book Band Rehearsals - Our Wedding Reception....
5) Do you prefer playing solo, or with other musicians?
Definitely with other musicians. There is a magic you create when working with other musicians, especially really good musicians that stretch you. I love the give and take and interplay. Even when I perform solo with Ed accompanying me on piano I am always so happy to have such a brilliant accompanist working with me. It's like giving my voice a magic carpet to fly on. (why do you think I married him? grin)
