As a lot of you may know, my wife Anne's a veterinary surgeon, working for Pengelly & Mizen in Peterborough.

Since 1997 she's been on the half of the duty rota where she doesn't do weekend callout one weekend in three, but is duty vet at the local greyhound track instead.

Until last week.

Today, I got to do something I haven't done in about 7 years - help my wife with surgery. Specifically, to anaesthetize a cat in order to unblock its bladder (male readers may wince now...). Sunday's there's no nurse around after 12 noon, so any surgical procedures either involve calling on a nurse, or (as [livejournal.com profile] demoneyes will attest) making use of whatever help is to hand and can be relied on.

She's still a model of quiet competence when she operates: I never cease to marvel, watching her work.

"What size wellies do you take?"

"You're not squeamish are you?" (as we enter the cow-shed)

"Take hold of this rope and pull when I tell you to..."

"Right, I'll finish putting the Great Dane's intestines back in. You go and start peeling the potatoes for lunch..."
