We went for a walk, and I took the new camera (on the theory that the secret of good photography is having a camera with you). This and a few others are on my Flickr page.

[For what it's worth, here's the details:
Camera: Canon EOS Digital Rebel
Exposure: 1/200th
Aperture: f/5.6
Focal Length: 45 mm (using the standard 18-55mm zoom)

Slightly under exposed and warmed up in iPhoto before uploading]

Those are very, very nice. The first time I took pictures with an SLR (35mm) was in October, on a bright sunny day. Fantastic lighting.

I was drooling over your depth of field on some of the closeups. Then I came back and saw which camera you were using. Of course you can get depth of field like that on a digital camera if you've got an SLR. :)

Don't get me wrong... a camera is still only as good as the eye on the person holding it. But good cameras do help. :)

Not even that good, really: it's a 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 lens. I can get a 50mm f1.8 for $60 off Amazon.

Yeah, but you can still do manual focus and stuff with it. I can't do that on my little 3.2 Nikon Coolpix. :) So it's all relatively speaking. :)

Which is about 3 stops better than what you have. Certainly better optics than the old 85mm f2 Sonnar design I was using, but similar angle of view.

I am going to have to get my film scanner running. Using available light, I was able to get one or two images which look as though they'll respond well to Photoshop and extreme post-processing -- very strong shadows from the stage lighting.

I succumbed to the f1.8 50mm today :)
Gig on Saturday, and I'd like to be able to hand someone a camera with GOOD low light capabilities. 50mm at f.1.8 is pretty much 3 and a bit stops from 55mm @ f5.8. Basically means I can run the camera at ISO400 indoors, with a bit of luck.
