My suggestion would be to leave the A1 just north of Colsterworth, on the B6403, going north on the east side of the A1, and following the A52 into Grantham, to pick up the A607 signposted for Melton Mowbray.

Latest report is the congestion is starting south of Colsterworth. If you have a map turn off at Stretton (and the famous Ram Jam Inn), and follow the minor roads via South Witham, North Witham, and Colsterworth, which will connect you to the B6403, but I'd be a little wary after dusk.
