Have just finished a technical discussion with a couple of colleagues, which ultimately boiled down to both of them (both of whom I consider more than competent) not understanding something I'd evidently found too intuitive to consider needing explanation.

[livejournal.com profile] armb (and any other ex-Shape Data employees) will hopefully understand when I lament 'Help, I'm turning into Bernie Solomon'!

Mike I may not know who Bernie is but given I often need to stop and try and explain why I just took three sideways steps to a point that seems totally unrelated to the current project, I do understand youre sense of mild bewilderment.

I once wrote a comment on a piece of code "Don't ask me how it works, trust me it does!" (which was true because I had tested it with all possible combinations of inputs)...

I see a resemblance with the famous comment about jazz, as well ("If you've gotta ask, you ain't gonna understand!")...

I have a German colleague in Houston who may fit the flip-side of that equation. He's definitely one of our design gurus, and has clear ideas about how things should be done. I'm getting used to him giving answers that can be paraphrased as "All you need to do is ". The trouble is that "all you need to do" usually seems to work out as the programming equivalent of, oh, say, performing, blindfold, a series of flawless triple-back-flips through burning hoops on the back of a galloping horse. He clearly lives in an orthogonal universe. ;)
